Does working as a research assistant at a biotech company, such as
Maxygen, after earning a BSc look good to doctoral programs? I really
want to work in industry after earning my medical degree --and IM
residency, ID fellowship, and medical microbiology fellowship-- and/or
research doctorate --and postdoctoral research fellowship--,
specifically something related to virology and molecular biology.
This is a ways off, as I am a 16yr old freshman student at Cerritos
College. I'll be seeking admittance to Sussex's Molecular Medicine --
http://www.sussex.ac.uk/Units/publications/ugrad2008/subjects/Molecular%20medicine
-- program immediately after taking my SATs. Do you think taking
Subject Tests in Mathematics --Level 2--, Biology M, and Chemistry,
and performing at a level of >1980 on the Reasoning Test, and at a
level of >660 on the Subject Tests, plus a CGPA of >3.375 and securing
a place in the Scholars' Honors Program would be good to get me
admission?
Thanks!!! |

It might. But it might also make them wonder whether you lacked the
record needed to go directly to grad program.
Don't try to game the system. A lot of things affect what you do. Let
it play out.
(But... experience is good. Summer research internships, etc, are
generally a plus.)
(Some business schools do prefer that students _not_ go there directly
from undergrad work. But for sciences, I doubt they would prefer that
in general.)

Hmm...I wonder why? I'd like get some additional lab experience, as
well as being paid for it --well, actually, I could enter the
"sandwich program", where I get placed as an intern at a lab, whether
a biotechnology company, hospital, or another--.
I'd think I'd then earn my DPhil and/or BM BCh from Oxford. Wishful
thinking, yes. The reason I want to earn my BSc from Sussex is that
it's three years to read your major, since you don't have any general
education requirements. It'll prepare me better than a US degree --
except one from MIT, Stanford, Harvard, etc.-- for grad or med school. |
